Diggstown (1992) — An underdog Rocky clone

“Okay, look: he’s bigger than you are, he’s tougher, he’s faster, he’s younger than you are. He hasn’t fought 22 rounds today. But you remember this: You… are black.”

Justin’s rating: 4 Wins, 5 Losses, 2 KO’s

Justin’s review: In the spirit of this boxing movie, I’ll explain why I rated it the way I did.

Wins: James Woods (recently the voice of Hades in Hercules), an astounding10(!) boxing matches during the second half of the movie, a handful of spicy humorous quotes, and Lou Gossett, Jr. managing to look and fight tough even though he’s treading on Rocky’s domain.

Losses: This flick takes so long to crank up to speed you might as well fast-forward during the first half-hour. Although centering around con men, it has little of the flair or suave dealings of better movies (say, Maverick). It also features way too much heavy (and cheap) sentiment and situations, too many little-used characters that might have been interesting given the chance, and not quite enough humor to earn itself a position as a comedy title.

However, the knockout came with a staggering finale that kept topping itself in the last ten minutes; Once the boxing started, it was hard not to get swept up in the adrenaline!
