D Films has acquired all Canadian rights to Magnet Releasing and Gareth Edward’s Monsters. “The story follows a US journalist who agrees to escort a shaken American tourist through an infected, quarantined zone in Mexico to the safety of the US border. Six years previously, the earth was invaded by aliens and new life forms began to appear in Mexico. Today, the American and Mexican military still struggle to contain ‘the creatures’…”

Magnet Releasing has acquired US rights to Quentin Dupieux’s Rubber. It’s “the story of Robert, an inanimate tire that has been abandoned in the desert, and suddenly and inexplicably comes to life. As Robert roams the bleak landscape, he discovers that he possesses telepathic powers that give him the ability to destroy anything he wishes without having to move. At first content to wreak havoc on small desert creatures and various lost items, his attention soon turns to humans, resulting in the most gory vehicular-related mayhem inflicted on screen by an “inanimate” object since Christine.”

Sigourney Weaver will reportedly star in Rodrigo Cortés’ Red Lights. About “how the brain does not give a true picture of reality,” it “follows a para-psychologist who attempts to debunk a very reputable psychic who has just returned to the limelight after 30 years.”

Derek Mears, Nina Dobrev, and James Remar have joined Kellan Lutz and Samuel L.Jackson in Jonah Loop’s Deathgames. The indie actioner is about “a young man (Lutz) who is kidnapped and forced into the savage world of a modern gladiator arena, where men fight to the death for entertainment of the online masses in games orchestrated by Jackson.”

Lindsay Lohan will star in Ryuhei Kitamura’s 3-D horror Black Friday 3D. “The film is said to follow a couple that’s viciously assaulted.A brother and friends seek out the murderer and come face to face with the infamous serial killer known as Tyler Hillburg!”

Prequels; Sequels & Remakes

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Nov. 18, 2011, though it is still unclear whether the last book will be split over two films.

Ice Age: Continental Drift is scheduled for July 13, 2012.

“Kick Ass 2: Balls to The Wall will go into production in 2011 with a 2012 release date planned.”

Mission: Impossible 4 will be directed by Brad Bird, and come out December 16, 2011.

Emma Roberts, Hayden Panettiere, and Rory Culkin have joined Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, and David Arquette in Scream 4. Roberts will be the female lead as Sidney Prescott’s cousin Jill. Panettiere and Culkin will be the best friend and love interest, respectively.

Fox has set a June 24, 2011, release date for Planet of the Apes prequel, the tentatively titled, Rise of the Apes:
“’Rise of the Apes’ is an origins story set in present-day San Francisco. The film is a reality-based cautionary tale, where man’s own experiments with genetic engineering lead to the development of intelligence in apes and the onset of a war for supremacy. WETA will render, for the first time ever in the film series, photo-realistic apes rather than costumed actors.” They’ve also announced that James Franco will play the lead, “a scientist (Franco) who has been working on a cure for Alzheimer’s.”

Gary Oldman, Michelle Yeoh, Jean-Claude Van Damme, and Victor Garber have joined the cast for sequel Kung Fu Panda: The Kaboom of Doom. To be released on May 27, 2011 (Memorial Day weekend), “Oldman voices the character of Lord Shen (a peacock), the film’s formidable new villain while Yeoh brings to life the mystical character of The Soothsayer (a goat). Van Damme and Garber round out the cast as Master Croc and Master Thundering Rhino, respectively.”

Paramount Pictures have not picked up the option to have Megan Fox appear in Transformers 3, and will instead write in a new love interest to be played by Victoria Secret model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley.

Colin Farrell and Toni Collette have joined Anton Yelchin in the Fright Night remake.

On Men In Black 3 [probably add a “-D” on there]:
“The film will use a time travel element that moves the action from contemporary back to 1969. Brolin will play the younger version of Jones’s Agent Kay character.”

Commercial director Daniel Benmayor has been hired to direct the Hitman sequel. While it’s unknown whether Fox will bring back Timothy Olyphant, the studio does have a contractual option to do so.

Adaptations

David Ellis is the latest director attached to War Monkeys.

Sharlto Copley has dropped out of D.J. Caruso’s I Am Number Four due to scheduling conflicts and will be replaced by Timothy Olyphant. Also, Kevin Durand will play the villain, an “alien commander hunting the survivors down on Earth.”

Kristen Stewart, Sam Riley, and Garrett Hedlund have been cast in Walter Salles’ adaptation of Jack Kerouac’s On the Road. Filming begins in August.

Jason Reitmanhas has been hired by New Line to write the MacGyver movie script.
